Strategic Investment Conference 2013

I have been incredibly blessed to be attending the 2013 Strategic Investment Conference down in San Diego, CA over the last couple of days. For those of you who may be unfamiliar, this conference is like Woodstock for economic gurus and the financial greats of our time.

As we have repeatedly pointed out in the past, understanding the macroeconomic picture is extremely important to successful investing in today's environment. I carve out approximately 2-4 hours each day to study the latest macroeconomic data releases, news, analyses, and various investment letters. Just about every major economist and investment manager whom I have followed for years converged at this conference to provide a free-flowing fire hydrant of their best investment ideas and economic forecasts for this year and beyond. It is my job (pleasure, really) to attempt to drink deeply and furiously take notes to gather every tidbit of useful information I possibly can on my clients' behalf; so I am happier than a kid in a candy shop with an unlimited spending budget to get to hear the latest thoughts and have the opportunity to directly interact with these economic giants.

I look forward to carving out time in the coming weeks to unpack all that I am being exposed to at this conference. There have been already a myriad of actionable ideas that we will be implementing on your behalf to enhance the way we navigate the economic road ahead. Though it is hard to see on the picture below that I took this morning, the lineup of speakers is simply incredible. See the list below for a brief overview:

-Paul McCulley, a former senior managing director of PIMCO, one of the largest active global fixed income managers in the world with over $2 Trillion (with a "T"!) in assets under management.

-Dr. Niall Ferguson, British historian, Harvard Professor, Senior Research Fellow at Oxford, and Senior Fellow at Standford. (Apparently, he could not quite take the time to do anything special with Yale while he was at it.)

-Jeffrey Gundlach, CEO and CIO of DoubleLine, a fixed income manager with over $52 Billion in assets under management.

-A panel made up of some of the top managed futures, global macro, long-short, hedge fund, and fixed income traders in the world that essentially provided some of their best ideas for 2013 and beyond.

-Dr. Nouriel Roubini, former senior economic adviser to US treasury department under Geithner, economist of the IMF, Federal Reserve, World Bank, and Bank of Israel, professor at NYU, and chairman of Roubini Global Economics.

-Dr. A. Gary Schilling - Dr. Schilling graduated from Amherst College AB in Physics, magna cum laude, and earned his MA and PhD in Economics at Stanford University. While on the West Coast, he served on the staffs of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and the Bank of America before starting his own firm in 1978. On numerous occasions, Dr. Schilling has been named as one of the top economic, commodity, stock, and bond forecasters in the world.

-Dr. Mohamed El-Erian, CEO and Co-CIO of PIMCO. He holds a PhD in economics from Oxford, was a managing director with Citigroup in London, and served with the IMF for 15 years prior to joining PIMCO.

-David Rosenberg, Chief Economist and Strategist for Gluskin Sheff, with assets under management of $5.5 Billion. David was formerly the North American Chief Economist for Bank of America-Merrill Lynch and has often been named one of the most accurate economic forecasters of his time.

-Kyle Bass, founder and principal of Hayman Capital Management, the hedge fund with which he correctly predicted and profited from the housing collapse and Euro crisis.

-Ian Bremmer, president and founder of Eurasia Group, a leading global political risk research and consulting firm, and a professor at Columbia University.

-Dr. Lacy Hunt, executive vice president of Hoisington Investment Management with over $5.7 Billion in assets under management. Dr. Hunt was the former senior economist of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and has authored two books and numerous articles.

And, the list goes on...
